If you've lifted your Wrangler JK more than 2 inches, your factory rubber brake lines are a liability. Here's why, and what to do about it.
Why Rubber Brake Lines Fail on Lifted Jeeps
The factory rubber brake lines on the JK are sized for stock ride height. When you lift the Jeep, the suspension droops further than the factory lines allow. The result: brake lines stretch to their limit at full droop — compromising the line, reducing braking performance, and eventually causing failure.
On the trail, if your brake line blows, you have no rear brakes. This is a real safety issue on lifted Jeeps, not a theoretical one.
Stainless Steel Braided vs Extended Rubber Lines
Stainless braided lines do two things: they accommodate the additional droop range a lifted Jeep needs, AND they improve braking feel. Braided lines don't expand under pressure the way rubber does — pedal feel is firmer and more consistent. Better for trail use and emergency stops.
Extended rubber lines solve the droop problem without improving feel. Less expensive, but miss the performance benefit.
Best Brake Lines for Lifted JK
- Rough Country Stainless Brake Lines (2-6" lift): Affordable, DOT compliant, available for most lift heights. Good entry-level option.
- Skyjacker Stainless Braided Lines: Higher quality fittings, longer warranty. Good choice for a more serious build.
- Russell Performance Brake Lines: The premium option. Highest quality braided construction, used in racing applications.
Install these at the same time as your lift kit — it's a 30-minute add-on job that eliminates a real trail hazard.
