Carli 2013–2023 Ram 3500 Diesel 4x4 Commuter Shock Set — 3.25-Inch Lift

The Carli Commuter shock set for 2013–2023 Ram 3500 diesel at 3.25 inches of lift is Carli's mid-tier shock system for the one-ton Ram HD platform. The Ram 3500 is a heavier, more capable truck than the Ram 2500 — greater payload capacity, available dually rear axle configuration, higher GVWR, and typically carrying heavier loads in real-world use. The Commuter shocks for the Ram 3500 are tuned for this truck's specific weight characteristics, not adapted from Ram 2500 calibrations. The front shock valving accounts for the Ram 3500's additional mass over the front axle, providing correct damping behavior for the heavier truck.

The 3.25-inch lift designation indicates this shock set is sized for the suspension geometry of a Ram 3500 running 3.25 inches of front lift — a lift height that provides meaningful tire clearance for larger off-road tires while remaining within the range that Carli's geometry correction hardware can address correctly on this platform. At 3.25 inches, the caster reduction from the radius arm geometry change is manageable with the appropriate drop bracket correction, and the suspension travel increase is within the range the Commuter shocks are designed to handle.

The Ram 3500 as a Distinct Suspension Platform

The Ram 3500 shares its basic front suspension architecture with the Ram 2500 but differs in meaningful ways that affect suspension specification. The Ram 3500 is available in both single-rear-wheel and dual-rear-wheel configurations, with the dually variant being particularly popular for fifth-wheel and gooseneck towing applications where maximum payload and stability matter most. The front axle on the Ram 3500 is rated for higher GVWR loads, and the front suspension components — including shocks — must handle the dynamic loads generated by decelerating a heavier truck-plus-trailer combination on varied road surfaces.

Carli's Commuter shocks for the Ram 3500 are calibrated for the 6.7L Cummins diesel's weight over the front axle of this specific truck, and for the damping demands of a one-ton truck being used at the high end of its load capacity. This specificity is what makes the Commuter perform correctly on a Ram 3500 rather than simply being a Ram 2500 shock applied to a heavier truck.

Commuter Performance Characteristics

The Commuter shock provides a meaningful improvement in ride quality over factory Ram 3500 shocks. Factory shocks on the 2013–2023 Ram 3500 are calibrated for the full range of operating conditions from empty to maximum payload — a range so wide that the calibration is necessarily a compromise that serves neither end of the range optimally. Carli's Commuter shocks narrow that compromise to the range where Ram 3500 diesel owners actually operate their trucks: partially to fully loaded highway and towing use, with the occasional off-road excursion on moderate terrain.

At highway speeds with a loaded trailer, the Commuter shocks provide more controlled body motion and better stability than factory shocks — less nose dive under braking, less rear squat under load, and better recovery after suspension inputs from road irregularities. On maintained off-road terrain, the Commuter provides improved articulation and more controlled response to larger obstacles than the factory shocks deliver. These improvements are consistent across the driving conditions that 2013–2023 Ram 3500 diesel owners typically encounter in daily use.

When to Step Up to the Pathfinder

The Commuter is the correct shock specification for Ram 3500 owners who drive primarily on-road and use the truck for towing, hauling, and occasional off-road driving on maintained surfaces. For owners who do sustained, demanding off-road driving — extended runs on rough terrain, high-speed desert driving, or any situation where the shocks are cycling continuously for hours — the Pathfinder remote reservoir system is the appropriate step up. The Pathfinder's thermal capacity advantage over the Commuter is most pronounced in these sustained hard-use conditions, where the conventional shock body's limited oil volume begins to show its limitations in damping consistency.

Fitment

The Commuter shock set fits 2013–2023 Ram 3500 with 6.7L Cummins diesel engine (4x4, all trims, all cab configurations, SRW and DRW). Designed for 3.25 inches of front lift. Running these shocks with a different lift height — either more or less than 3.25 inches — may result in incorrect shock geometry at the ends of travel. Confirm your lift height with Carli before ordering if you are not certain your setup is at the 3.25-inch specification.

Installation

The Commuter shocks install in the factory mounting locations on the 2013–2023 Ram 3500. No external reservoir mounts are required — the Commuter uses a conventional shock body without remote reservoir. A front-end alignment is required after any change to front ride height. Caster correction hardware is recommended at 3.25 inches of lift on the Ram 3500 platform and should be installed alongside the shocks rather than as a follow-up service. Estimated installation time for the front and rear shock set at a shop with a lift is two to three hours, not including alignment time. Torque all hardware to Carli's specifications.

Complete the Ram 3500 System

The Commuter shocks are the damping component of a complete front suspension upgrade on the 2013–2023 Ram 3500 diesel. Pair with Carli's coil springs for the Ram 3500 at the appropriate lift height for matched spring and shock tuning. At 3.25 inches of lift, also install Carli's sway bar drop bracket to restore correct sway bar geometry, and confirm whether steering stabilizer hardware is appropriate for your truck's specific configuration and usage pattern. A complete, correctly specified system produces better results than any individual component installed in isolation.

Real-World Performance: What Owners Report After Installation

Owners who upgrade to Carli's system on their Ram HD or Super Duty trucks report consistent improvements across several areas. The most immediate change is highway stability — the truck tracks more confidently in a straight line, requires less steering correction over grooved pavement and highway imperfections, and feels more planted under hard braking. This improvement is a direct result of correct shock valving for the truck's weight; the front end is being controlled correctly rather than moving freely until the shock reaches its compressed state and then resisting suddenly.

Off-road performance improvements are most noticeable during sustained driving over rough terrain — extended dirt road travel, moderate trail use, or high-speed desert driving. At the point where a conventional shock begins to fade from heat buildup, a correctly specified Carli system maintains consistent damping behavior. The truck continues to feel predictable and controllable when it would otherwise be developing the loose, inconsistent handling that characterizes heat-faded shocks. This is particularly important for owners who use their trucks as working platforms in remote locations where handling predictability is a safety consideration, not just a performance preference.

Towing behavior improvements are also consistently reported. The front end maintains its stability under the weight transfer that occurs when braking with a heavy trailer behind the truck. The rear does not oscillate as dramatically when a trailer causes pitch under braking. The overall truck-plus-trailer combination feels more cohesive and predictable, reducing driver fatigue over long towing runs. For Ram HD and Super Duty owners whose primary use case involves regular heavy towing, this improvement in towing dynamics is often more valuable in daily use than the off-road performance gains — they pull a trailer five days a week and go off-road twice a year, and the Carli system improves the use case that matters most to them every time they hook up and drive.

Maintenance and Long-Term Care

Shock absorbers are wear components. Even the best-specified, correctly installed shocks have a service life measured in miles and cycles — and the more demanding the use, the shorter that service life. For Ram HD and Super Duty owners who use their trucks seriously, monitoring shock performance is a routine part of ownership. The early signs of shock wear are subtle: slightly more body movement over highway imperfections, marginally longer recovery after bumps, a very slight increase in nose dive under braking. These are easy to miss if they develop gradually. A useful benchmark is to note how the truck feels on a familiar road immediately after installation; revisit that same road once a year and compare. Any meaningful change in behavior over familiar terrain is a signal worth investigating.

Inspect shock bodies and reservoir hoses visually during routine oil changes or tire rotations. Look for oil residue or streaking on the shock body — a small amount of seepage at the shaft seal is normal on used shocks, but active dripping indicates a seal that needs attention. Check reservoir hose fittings for tightness and look for any abrasion wear where the hose passes near moving components. Carli shocks are built for long service life, but no shock lasts forever on a truck that is being used as designed. Timely replacement maintains the suspension performance and protects surrounding components from the accelerated wear that results from degraded shock damping.

Building a Complete Suspension System: The Right Approach

The most common mistake in suspension upgrades on Ram HD and Super Duty trucks is treating individual components as independent improvements rather than as parts of a system. A new set of shocks installed on stock springs at a non-standard lift height will not perform as designed — the shocks are calibrated for a specific spring rate and a specific geometry that must both be present for the damping behavior to be correct. New springs without matched shocks produce a spring rate that the shocks are not designed to control. A lift without geometry corrections produces a suspension that is at the wrong angle for all of its components simultaneously. The correct approach is to build the system completely, with all components specified for the same application, installed in the correct sequence, and verified with a professional alignment at the end.

Carli's component lineup is designed with this system approach from the ground up. The spring rates for a given platform and lift height are developed alongside the shock valving. The geometry correction hardware — radius arm drop brackets, bump drop pucks, sway bar drop brackets — is dimensioned to work with the specific lift height and shock geometry that the system is designed around. The steering stabilizers are specified for the steering dynamics of the lifted platform with the larger tires that accompany a meaningful lift. Every component has a place in the system, and the system performs correctly when all of those components are present and correctly installed.

For Ram HD and Super Duty owners who are building a lifted truck for the first time, the best investment before purchasing any components is a conversation with Carli's technical support about your specific truck, your intended lift height, and your intended use case. Carli can specify the complete parts list for your application, which prevents the common outcome of spending money on individual components that do not work together correctly and requiring additional purchases to correct the resulting system problems. Buy the right system the first time.
