The Carli 6-inch multi-rate front coil springs for 2003–2013 Dodge Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 diesel are the correct coil spring choice for Ram HD owners building or upgrading a 6-inch front lift on the classic Ram diesel platform. These springs are designed for use with Carli 6-inch suspension systems and represent the correct spring specification for this truck, this lift height, and this engine weight — not a generic aftermarket spring adapted from a lighter truck application.
Multi-rate springs use a variable coil pitch that changes spring rate progressively as the spring compresses. This is the fundamental advantage over linear-rate springs. A multi-rate spring rides softly over small bumps and light loads, then progressively stiffens as load increases or impacts grow larger. For a diesel Ram HD that operates anywhere from empty daily commuter to fully loaded work truck with a trailer, this progressive behavior delivers better ride quality across the full range of conditions than any single spring rate can achieve.
The 5.9L and 6.7L Cummins diesel engines are significantly heavier than gas alternatives. A 2003–2013 Ram 2500 or 3500 diesel puts substantial engine weight over the front axle — considerably more than a gas-engine Ram of the same generation. This weight difference is critical for spring selection and is the most common mistake made when specifying springs for lifted Ram HD trucks. Springs calibrated for gas-powered Ram trucks will sag and perform poorly under the diesel's weight. Generic springs designed to cover a broad weight range will compromise, being either too stiff for good ride quality when empty or too soft to maintain correct ride height under load.
Carli builds these springs specifically for the Ram diesel front-end weight. The spring rates are calibrated for trucks with the 5.9L from 2003 to 2007 and the 6.7L from 2007.5 to 2013. The multi-rate design accommodates both the empty and loaded operating states that diesel owners move through regularly — empty return trip in the morning, fully loaded work run in the afternoon. One spring that works correctly in both conditions rather than compromising between them.
The Carli 6-inch multi-rate coil springs fit 2003–2010 Dodge Ram 2500 diesel (4x4, all trims), 2003–2010 Dodge Ram 3500 diesel (4x4, all trims, SRW and DRW), 2011–2013 Ram 2500 diesel (4x4, all trims), and 2011–2013 Ram 3500 diesel (4x4, all trims). These springs are for diesel-powered trucks only. Gas engine Ram HD trucks of the same generation have different front-end weights and require different spring rates to achieve correct geometry and ride behavior. Confirm your engine configuration before ordering — the diesel-specific spring rate will not perform correctly on a gas-engine truck.
Front coil spring replacement on the 2003–2013 Ram HD requires spring compression equipment and is a moderately complex procedure. The process involves safely raising and supporting the truck, removing the front wheels and related components to access the springs, compressing and removing the factory springs, and installing the Carli springs in the correct orientation. A quality spring compressor and knowledge of the coil-over-axle front suspension geometry on these trucks is required. This is not a DIY job without proper equipment and experience with this suspension architecture. Estimated installation time at a shop is three to four hours for spring replacement. Combined with a shock upgrade, add additional time. A front-end alignment is required after any spring installation — book the alignment appointment before dropping the truck off for the suspension work so it can be completed in the same visit.
The 6-inch multi-rate coil springs pair with Carli's 6-inch shock systems for the 2003–2013 Ram HD. If you are building a complete 6-inch front suspension, the spring and shock combination should be matched from the same manufacturer with tuning designed to work together. Carli shocks are valved to work with Carli spring rates. Mixing Carli springs with non-Carli shocks or the reverse produces a suspension that does not perform as designed, regardless of how good either individual component is. At 6 inches of lift, additional geometry corrections beyond springs and shocks may be required — brake line extensions, track bar adjustments, and alignment correction for caster are common requirements at this lift height. Build your complete parts list with Carli's technical guidance before starting the installation.
Six inches of front lift on a heavy-duty truck is a significant modification. Done correctly with correctly spec'd springs and matched shocks, the result can be a truck that handles and rides better than stock despite the additional height. Done incorrectly with mismatched or generic components, 6 inches of lift produces a truck that is harsh, unstable under load, and wears components prematurely. Carli's 6-inch multi-rate springs are the foundation of doing it correctly on the 2003–2013 Ram 2500 and 3500 diesel. For Ram HD owners who want to run serious lift without sacrificing the ride quality that makes a diesel heavy-duty livable as a daily driver, these springs are the correct starting point.
