The Carli billet high-clearance extended control arms for 2003–2009 Dodge Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 4x4 are machined in-house at Carli's facility from 6061 billet aluminum — one of the strongest aluminum alloys available for structural suspension components. These control arms correct three problems that develop on lifted Ram HD trucks simultaneously: incorrect suspension geometry from the lift, inadequate tire clearance from the factory arm shape, and weak factory arm design that becomes the limiting factor in a lifted Ram's off-road capability.



The factory control arms on the 2003–2009 Ram 2500 and 3500 are cast iron or steel stampings designed for stock ride height and stock tire sizes. At stock height, they perform their intended function adequately. Once you lift the truck and install larger tires, the factory arms become a liability on multiple fronts. The geometry they create is incorrect for the lifted ride height, the arm shape restricts tire clearance when turning or articulating, and the strength of the factory casting is not matched to the demands of a truck being driven seriously off-road at an increased lift height. Carli's billet extended arms address all three issues in a single component.



Geometry Correction: Why Extended Arms Matter



The front control arms on the 2003–2009 Ram 2500 and 3500 work with the radius arm geometry to determine the axle's position relative to the frame through the full range of suspension travel. At stock height, this geometry is factory-calibrated to maintain correct caster, camber, and axle centerline position as the suspension compresses and droops. When you add lift height, the relationship between the control arms, the axle, and the frame changes. The control arms are now operating at angles they were not designed for, which introduces geometry errors that affect steering response, caster stability, and the way the axle tracks under the truck during cornering and over rough terrain.



Extended control arms correct this by repositioning the inner pivot point of the arm — the connection to the frame — to account for the lifted geometry. With the inner pivot relocated, the arm operates at the correct angle for the lifted ride height, restoring proper caster and maintaining the axle in its correct centered position through the suspension travel range. This geometry correction makes the truck handle correctly at the lifted height rather than fighting the incorrect geometry that stock arms produce when used outside their designed range.



High Clearance Design for Larger Tires



The billet construction allows Carli to shape the control arms with a profile that provides clearance for larger tires than the factory arms allow. On a stock Ram 2500 or 3500, the factory arms sit close to the tire's path during steering lock and suspension articulation — a design that works fine with factory tire sizes but becomes a rubbing problem once larger tires are installed. Carli's high-clearance profile moves the arm's body away from the tire's swept path, providing clearance for the tire sizes that Ram HD owners typically run with a lifted suspension: 35-inch to 40-inch diameter tires that would contact factory arms at lock or full articulation.



This clearance is not achieved by simply bending the arm outward — that would introduce its own geometry errors. Carli machines the correct clearance profile into the arm while maintaining the geometric relationship between the inner and outer pivot points that is required for correct suspension geometry. The result is an arm that clears larger tires and maintains correct geometry simultaneously — not a tradeoff between the two requirements.



6061 Billet Aluminum: Strength and Weight



6061 aluminum is a heat-treatable alloy with excellent strength-to-weight ratio and good weldability — the material choice for structural components in automotive, aerospace, and industrial applications where both strength and weight matter. The tensile strength of properly heat-treated 6061-T6 aluminum is approximately 45,000 PSI, which exceeds the yield strength of many steel stampings used in factory suspension components while weighing roughly one-third of steel by volume.



For a suspension component, reduced weight means reduced unsprung mass — the weight of everything between the shock absorbers and the road surface. Lower unsprung mass improves suspension response, allowing the wheels to follow ground contours more accurately and maintain contact with the road more consistently than heavier components allow. Fitment: 2003–2009 Dodge Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 4x4



The Carli billet extended control arms fit 2003–2009 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4 (all trim levels, all available engines including 5.9-liter Cummins diesel, 6.7-liter Cummins diesel, and Magnum gas variants) and 2003–2009 Dodge Ram 3500 4x4 (all trim levels, all engines, SRW and DRW configurations). The 2003–2009 Ram HD used a consistent front suspension architecture across this model year range, making these arms compatible across the full generation. They are not compatible with the 2010 and newer Ram HD, which updated the front suspension mounting geometry, or with 2002 and earlier trucks, which used an earlier suspension architecture.



These arms are designed for use with Carli's lift systems for the 2003–2009 Ram HD at the lift heights where extended control arms are the appropriate correction. Confirm with Carli's technical support that extended arms are the correct specification for your specific lift height and suspension configuration before ordering — at some lift heights, other geometry corrections take precedence, and at others, extended arms are the primary correction needed.



Installation



The billet extended control arms replace the factory upper control arms in the 2003–2009 Ram HD front suspension. Installation involves safely supporting the front axle, disconnecting the factory upper control arm at both the inner frame pivot and the outer ball joint or knuckle connection, removing the factory arms, and installing the Carli billet arms in the correct orientation. The inner pivot bolts into the existing frame mounts using the factory hardware pattern. The outer end connects to the knuckle or ball joint using the included hardware.



A front-end alignment is mandatory after installation. The billet arms change the geometry of the front suspension — that is their purpose — and the alignment must be set with the new geometry in place to ensure correct caster, camber, and toe before the truck is driven at highway speeds. Do not skip or delay the alignment after installing extended control arms. Estimated installation time at a shop equipped for this work is three to four hours for the control arm replacement, not including alignment time. Have the alignment appointment booked before the truck goes in for the suspension work so the full job can be completed in a single visit.

The will be a 15% restocking fee subtracted from any returned items. Once processed, the customer must ship the product back and submit the tracking information. Bull Strap will issue a full refund minus the 15% restocking fee once the item(s) is/are received and determined to be in 'Brand New' condition.
