A winch is your self-recovery insurance for serious trail use. When you're deep in terrain where a tow truck won't reach, a quality winch on a solid bumper mount is what gets you out. Winch Capacity: Rated Load vs Real World

Winch ratings are first-layer capacity — the pull when the drum is empty and the cable is at maximum length. As cable winds onto the drum, effective pull decreases because the mechanical advantage changes. A 9,500 lb winch with 3 layers of cable on the drum might only pull 6,000 lbs effectively. Rule of thumb: buy a winch rated at 1.5x your vehicle's gross weight to ensure adequate real-world capacity.

For a 5,000 lb truck: minimum 7,500 lb rated winch, 9,500 lb is better. For a 6,000 lb full-size Jeep or truck: 12,000 lb rating minimum. Oversize slightly rather than undersizing — in recovery situations you want margin, not minimum spec.

Synthetic Line vs Steel Cable

Synthetic rope has largely replaced steel cable for off-road winching. Synthetic is lighter, floats in water, doesn't develop the memory that makes steel cable spring-back dangerous if it snaps, and is safer to handle under tension. The trade-off: synthetic is susceptible to abrasion and UV degradation over time, requires inspection and periodic replacement. For trail use, the safety advantages of synthetic outweigh the maintenance requirements.

Recovery Gear: The Full Kit

A winch is only as good as the recovery setup around it. You need: a tree saver strap to protect anchor points, shackles at each connection point (steel for load-bearing connections, not aluminum), a snatch block to redirect pull or double your effective pull capacity, and a backup recovery strap for vehicle-to-vehicle recovery when winch anchors aren't available.
