Wheel Hubs — Off-Road and Truck Wheels

Wheels are one of the most visible upgrades on any truck, SUV, or off-road build — but they're also one of the most functionally important. The right wheel diameter, width, offset, and backspacing affects tire clearance, wheel bearing load, handling, and how the vehicle looks and sits. Getting the wrong wheel — particularly the wrong offset on a lifted truck — can cause rubbing, increased wheel bearing wear, and handling changes that no amount of tuning will fix. Wheel Specifications That Matter

Diameter
Measured in inches from bead seat to bead seat across the wheel. Common sizes: 16", 17", 18", 20" for trucks and SUVs. Larger diameter reduces sidewall height, which improves handling but reduces off-road cushion. Smaller diameter allows taller sidewalls — better for aired-down off-road use.
Width
Wider wheels fit wider tires. Match wheel width to tire section width — a 12" wide wheel for a 12.50" tire, for example. Too narrow or too wide affects tire seating and bead retention.
Bolt pattern

Backspacing
Distance from the back of the wheel to the mounting face. Controls how far the wheel sits inside the fender. Insufficient backspacing = wheel pokes out; too much = wheel rubs on components inside the fender.
Center bore
Hub-centric wheels have a center bore machined to match the hub diameter of your specific vehicle — they center on the hub, not just the lug nuts. Hub-centric wheels reduce vibration and wheel runout. Lug-centric wheels use lug nuts to center — acceptable but requires precise lug nut torquing to avoid vibration.

Wheel Materials

Cast aluminum alloy: The most common wheel material for trucks and SUVs. Good balance of weight, cost, and corrosion resistance. Most aftermarket wheels in the 17"–20" truck market are cast alloy.

Forged aluminum: Stronger than cast at a given weight — or lighter at a given strength. Common on performance and race applications where unsprung weight matters. Premium price point.

Steel: Heavier but extremely strong and repairable — bent steel can often be straightened; bent alloy usually can't. Steel wheels are preferred for dedicated rock crawlers where wheel damage is a routine risk.
