Standard flooded batteries are the factory option on most vehicles — reliable, affordable, but sensitive to deep discharge and vibration. Fine for stock vehicles with light accessory loads.
AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) is the upgrade most vehicles actually need. AGM handles deep discharge and recharge cycles far better than flooded, tolerates vibration, and is required by most OEMs for vehicles with start-stop systems. If your vehicle came with AGM from the factory, you must replace it with AGM — a flooded battery will fail prematurely and may damage your charging system.
Lithium batteries (LiFePO4) are half the weight of AGM for the same cold-cranking amps — critical for race builds and off-road vehicles where every pound counts. They also hold voltage better under load. The tradeoff: higher cost and they require a lithium-compatible charger.
Match or exceed your OEM CCA rating for your climate. In cold climates, go 10–20% above OEM spec. High-performance engines with tight tolerances (supercharged, diesel) benefit from higher CCA even in warm climates. Never downgrade CCA to save money.
