Understanding Gear Ratios
A gear ratio like 3.73:1 means the driveshaft rotates 3.73 times for every one rotation of the wheels. Higher numerical ratios (4.10, 4.56, 4.88, 5.13) are "lower" gears — they multiply torque more, giving you better acceleration and pulling power at the expense of fuel economy and top speed.
When to Re-Gear
The most common reason to re-gear is installing larger tires. Bigger tires effectively raise your overall gearing (like being in a taller gear all the time), making your truck feel sluggish, hurting fuel economy, and stressing the transmission.

Open vs Limited-Slip vs Locking Differentials
The type of differential carrier determines how power is distributed between your wheels — and this is where off-road vs street performance really diverges.
Open Differential
The stock setup on most trucks. An open diff sends power to the wheel with the least resistance. On pavement, this is fine. Off-road, it means that if one wheel loses traction (mud, rocks, air), all the power goes to that spinning wheel while the other wheel with grip sits motionless.
Limited-Slip Differential (LSD)
LSDs use clutch packs, gears, or other mechanisms to bias torque toward the wheel with more traction. They're a great street compromise — smoother than a locker but more capable than an open diff.
- Clutch-type LSD: Most common. Uses clutch plates to limit slip. Wears over time.
- Gear-type (Torsen/helical): Uses worm gears to bias torque. No clutches to wear. Smooth operation.
- Electronic LSD (eLSD): Computer-controlled clutch pack. Found in many modern trucks and performance vehicles.
Locking Differential
A locker physically connects both axle shafts so both wheels turn at the same speed regardless of traction. This is the gold standard for off-road traction but can make street driving awkward (tire chirping in turns, understeer).
- Selectable Lockers (ARB, Eaton E-Locker): The best of both worlds. Open on the street, locked on the trail. Engaged via dash switch (electric or air-activated). $800–$1,500+
- Automatic Lockers (Detroit Locker, Spartan, Aussie): Always locked, unlock briefly during turns. Clunky on-road but bombproof off-road. $300–$800.
- Spool: Full-time 100% lock. Only for dedicated race or rock crawling vehicles. Not street legal.

Front vs Rear Locker: Which First?
If you can only afford one locker, start with the rear. Here's why:
- The rear axle handles most of the off-road work (pushing the vehicle forward)
- A rear locker is less disruptive to street handling than a front locker
- Front lockers can make steering heavy and unpredictable on loose surfaces
For serious off-road rigs, the ideal setup is selectable lockers front and rear. Lock the rear for most trail obstacles, add the front locker only when you need maximum traction on rock crawls or steep, loose climbs.
